St. Anthony Endowments
An endowment fund can be established with cash, securities or other tangible assets. Each fund is invested with the goal that it will last in perpetuity. A percentage is available annually to fund ongoing or new projects. St. Anthony has several endowments that are designed to accept gifts that are restricted to specific purposes. A separate endowment has been set up to accept undesignated and unrestricted gifts where the annual earnings can be used for urgent needs or emergencies.

General Purpose Endowment
This unrestricted fund allows St. Anthony to apply annual income to the area of most urgent need. Such flexibility assures that St. Anthony can respond to opportunities or needs as they arise.
Recruitment & Retention of Staff
St. Anthony's commitment to recruit and retain well-trained physicians and staff is a top priority. This fund provides resources for physician recruitment and scholarships for healthcare professionals.
Community Health & Education
Annual income from this fund supports education and training for students, hospital staff and the community. A high fidelity medical mannequin simulates real-life situations in a classroom setting for the training of students and continuing education of staff. The St. Anthony Education Center is home to a wide variety of community education classes.
Pastoral Care
This endowment supports St. Anthony's mission to serve both the spiritual and healthcare needs of patients, residents and staff. Spiritual care staff provide visits in the hospital and nursing home, along with spiritual support for hospice patients, outpatients and emergency department patients and families. Daily mass and prayer services are held in the St. Anthony Chapel.
Cancer Care
St. Anthony provides cancer care including early detection, education and diagnostic treatment. Annual endowment income helps with the purchase of new equipment and upgrades to existing equipment so patients will always receive the most up-to-date cancer treatment in a compassionate, caring environment. A special "Friendship Fund" helps patients who need travel assistance while they receive treatment for their cancer at St. Anthony.
Cardiac Care
St. Anthony, in partnership with Iowa Heart Center, is committed to providing comprehensive cardiology services. Annual endowment earnings will help provide the latest technology in both diagnostic and interventional cardiology services.
Orthopedic
A wide variety of specialized orthopedic care is offered at St. Anthony, including joint replacement, treatment for sports-related injuries and physical rehabilitation. Endowment income will assist St. Anthony in acquiring new equipment and technology for surgery and rehabilitation, along with recruiting specialized physicians and staff. St. Anthony partners with Des Moines Orthopedic Surgeons in providing orthopedic services.
Women's Services
St. Anthony provides comprehensive healthcare for women, including board-certified OB/GYN services, obstetric, pelvic and breast ultrasound and CT needle localization and biopsy. The new 3-D mammography continues to be the best screening technology for early detection of breast cancer with fewer call-backs for false positives.
Mental Health
St. Anthony is one of very few facilities in Iowa to provide both in-patient and out-patient mental health services. Reimbursement from insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid do not completely cover the costs of providing important mental health services in a timely manner. Annual earnings help cover shortfalls in reimbursement.
Innovation & Technology
This endowment is essential for the continued acquisition of medical and surgical technology which allow St. Anthony to be a premier regional healthcare provider. The recent purchase of a DaVinci surgical robot is an example of how this fund benefits St. Anthony and our patients.
Senior Services & Alzheimer's Unit
St. Anthony Nursing Home is a specialized 79-bed facility attached to the hospital which includes an 18-bed secure Alzheimer's unit. This endowment will assist St. Anthony in providing specialized, appropriate eldercare services in a secure, home-like environment.
