Women's Choice AwardsSt. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, IA, has been named in two awards as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Satisfaction, and Emergency Care by the Women’s Choice Award®, America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare. The award signifies that St. Anthony is in the top Patient Experience national rank as #6 out of 1,056 hospitals, (St. Anthony is classified as a medium hospital). St. Anthony is also in the top 5% out of 4,728 hospitals for Emergency Care and one of 477 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for emergency care in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the effort given by our staff,” said Barb Toohey, Vice President of Quality at St. Anthony. “The pandemic has created so many additional challenges, so to receive these awards under the current circumstances shows how important providing quality care for our patients continues to be for our employees.”

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, good patient experience positively correlates to disease management, adherence to treatment plans and health outcomes. Providing good patient experience is also good for business as it results in greater employee morale and satisfaction thereby reducing turnover and helping recruit top talent. It also keeps patients loyal and happy and less likely to change providers or systems again helping the bottom line.

Additionally, each year, there are more than 130 million emergency room visits in the U.S. Emergency departments continue to be an essential part of the healthcare system as they provide fast, life-or-limb saving care to millions each year. Unlike other hospital departments that interact with the same patient and families for an extended period, ER staffs typically have one patient encounter, often when anxiety and fear is at its peak.

“Over ninety percent of the time, women make the healthcare decisions for their families –whether it’s finding the right pediatrician for her child, navigating a tough diagnosis for her spouse, advocating for her aging parents or, of course, getting care for herself. By raising your standards to meet the highest expectations – which studies show tend to be held by women – you’re giving everyone the best you have to offer.” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “The Women’s Choice Award is so much more than an award. As one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Experience and Emergency Care, your entire hospital and all of your service lines are lifted up for the exceptional experience you provide – not only for women but for all patients. What a great achievement!”

The methodology for America’s Best Hospitals award is unique in that it combines Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results with primary research about women’s healthcare preferences. The award recognizes based on several process of care measures.

Criteria for selecting St. Anthony Regional Hospital as one of America’s Best also included the percentage of patients who came to the emergency department with stroke symptoms who received brain scan results within 45 minutes of arrival. Also included this year were hospitals that performed well in responding to patients showing symptoms of severe sepsis, a very dangerous condition. The awarded hospitals represent those with emergency departments with average measure times in the highest 25th to 50th percentile in the country. Hospitals received additional credit if they have an accredited trauma center.
