Nominations for the honor are reviewed by a committee of individuals from a variety of healthcare organizations across Iowa. Great Iowa Nurses are chosen based on demonstrated service to patients, leadership, and mentoring or serving as a role model.
A portion of Stephanie’s nomination reads: “Stephanie demonstrates leadership often. She is willing to precept and teach students and is always a positive resource to turn to without hesitation. I know when I ask her a question, her response will be evidence-based and policy-driven. Her professionalism and levelheadedness make me look up to her regularly. Stephanie’s biggest contribution is being an excellent bedside nurse. These days, many shy away from the bedside for various reasons. We need strong bedside nurses to acclimate new nurses to the nursing profession. Healthcare runs on bedside nurses and her level of experience and knowledge is extremely valuable.”
A portion of Sarah’s nomination reads: “Sarah consistently goes above and beyond in her care for residents. She anticipates needs, treats everyone with compassion and respect, and creates moments of comfort and joy. Her positive attitude and dedication make a lasting difference in the lives of those she serves. Sarah demonstrates strong leadership by mentoring new team members, guiding them through challenging situations, and sharing her knowledge to build their confidence. She consistently models professionalism and compassionate care, setting a positive example for colleagues. Beyond providing medical treatment, Sarah strives to create a sense of dignity, safety, and belonging for each St. Anthony Nursing Home resident.”
A portion of Susan’s nomination reads: “Susan’s leadership, expertise, and calm demeanor have saved countless lives and mentored many. What makes Susan remarkable is her heart. Despite everything she has accomplished, she is the kindest, most humble person you'll ever meet. She leads with compassion, treats everyone with respect, and inspires everyone around her. You can't go anywhere in the hospital or community without someone telling you how wonderful Susan is to work with or how she gave wonderful care to them or their loved one. Susan isn’t just a nurse – she’s a mentor, teacher, friend and mother and has devoted her life to caring for others.”
On Monday, May 4, 2026, St. Anthony employees, along with family and friends of Stephanie, Sarah and Susan gathered at St. Anthony to celebrate their achievements.
“It’s incredibly meaningful to see Sarah, Stephanie, and Susan recognized with the ‘Great Iowa Nurse’ award. Having three nurses from St. Anthony honored at once speaks volumes about the dedication and skill they bring to their patients every day. This recognition reflects not just their individual excellence, but also the strength of our entire nursing team across all departments and services at St. Anthony.
Celebrating nurses is so important because they are at the heart of patient care. They’re there in the most critical moments, offering expertise, comfort, and advocacy. Taking time to recognize their work helps highlight the vital role they play in our communities and reminds them how valued and appreciated they truly are. Thank you to all of our nurses at St. Anthony!”
