The human brain is one of the most essential and complex organs in the human body. As the control center responsible for thoughts, reasoning, learning, movement, memory, speech, and the function of many organs within our body, the brain is amazing.

The brain weighs around three pounds and receives information through our five senses: Brain Awarenesssight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing - often many at one time. An injury to the brain can either be mild or severe and can have wide-range physical and psychological effects. March is Brain Injury Awareness Month and the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) has led the nation to observe the theme for the past three years, ‘Change Your Mind’. This important campaign is designed to de-stigmatize brain injury, empower those who have survived brain jury and their caregivers and promote the support available.

A neurologist is a medical doctor who specializes in treating diseases of the nervous system; namely, the brain and the spinal cord. Common disorders that a neurologist treats include epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, a stroke, migraines, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, and Parkinson’s disease.

If an illness has yet to be diagnosed, it’s important to be on the lookout for potential signs of a serious disorder. If you or someone you know has recently been experiencing symptoms such as muscle weakness, coordination problems, confusion, or dizziness, they should see a neurologist as soon as possible. People who are also having problems with their senses, such as vision, smell, or touch, should also see a neurologist since issues like these are often related to nervous system disorders.

Now is the time to schedule an appointment at St. Anthony Clinic. St. Anthony is proud to offer this important specialty for our patients to evaluate, diagnose, and create a treatment plan for neurological disorders close to home. To schedule an appointment, call (712) 792-2222 today.
