The American Heart Association (AHA) has named April “MOVE MORE” month. Did you know being more active lead to you living longer? According to the AHA, people who are physically active and maintain a healthy weight live around seven years longer than those who are not active and are obese. In addition, those extra years are healthier years to enjoy life and do the things you most enjoy. Staying active helps delay or prevent chronic diseases associated with aging by doing the following:

  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Boost your levels of good cholesterol
  • Improve blood flow (circulation)
  • Keep your weight under control
  • Prevent bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis

Walking is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to stay active. Everyone has access to it and can fit it into their schedule throughout the day. Here are a few examples to try:

  • In the morning, park your vehicle 10 minutes away from your job and walk briskly to work.
  • At lunch, walk for 10 minutes around where you work, indoors or outdoors.
  • At the end of the day, walk briskly for 10 minutes back to your vehicle.

Remember, every step counts! Most adults should aim for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity at least five days a week and this is one way to meet this goal.
