St. Anthony Regional Hospital has opened the St. Anthony Surgical Group and welcomes two new general surgeons, Patricia Teschke, M.D., and Nicholas J. Kuiper, D.O. Both physicians perform general surgical operations full-time and are actively taking new patients. The St. Anthony Surgical Group offices are located on the second floor of the hospital between Iowa Heart Center and St. Anthony Eye Clinic. To schedule an appointment with either surgeon, call (712) 794-5700.
“We are excited to open the St. Anthony Surgical Group,” said Eric Hammer, Vice President of Regional Operations. “With the addition of two general surgeons, our west central Iowa patients will continue to receive high quality specialty surgeries. We are committed to being your regional leader in healthcare."
Dr. Teschke comes to St. Anthony most recently from Miami, Florida. She earned her associate of arts degree from the College of Southern Idaho and her bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry, as well as her doctorate degree, from the University of Colorado. She completed her residency in general surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Teschke’s experience in plastic surgery, specifically breast reconstructive surgery for those who have battled breast cancer, gives her insight into the entire surgical process for all patients –especially women. Teschke is also bilingual, speaking fluent Portuguese and English.
“From the moment I interviewed at St. Anthony, I really enjoyed the hospital and the community. The surgeons and staff were kind and friendly, and I felt this is a place I can see myself for many years to come,” Teschke said. “I have a passion for surgery and enjoy the variety the job brings. I look forward to what the future has in store at St. Anthony.”
In her spare time, Teschke enjoys painting and staying active through running, hiking and rock climbing.
Dr. Kuiper earned his medical degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines. He completed an internship and general surgery residency at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Prior to joining St. Anthony Surgical Group, Dr. Kuiper was a partner of Surgical Associates in Grinnell and a general surgeon in Waterloo. He was trauma director and served on the hospital board of directors at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, and was director of surgery at Marengo Memorial Hospital. He has also been an adjunct instructor of general surgery at Des Moines University since 2010.
Kuiper has performed more than 600 robotic surgeries and is recognized by many in the field as an expert at Da Vinci Robotic Surgery. He has served as a Da Vinci Proctor/Trainer for several surgeons since 2013.
“I am very impressed with the staff and quality of care that St. Anthony provides, and I look forward to being part of the new surgical group and overall team,” said Kuiper. “The hospital and community have been very welcoming to all of us, and we are excited to get settled and get involved.”
Dr. Kuiper enjoys spending time with his wife, Stacey, and three children. He also enjoys golfing, kayaking and woodworking.
