Peace Poles in Memory Garden

Four Kuemper students began a project well over a year ago for a class at Kuemper in which they were challenged with finding a project that made a difference. They presented their plan but when the pandemic closed schools in March 2019, they were not required to see the project through. However, on their own accord, they chose to finish the poles and presented them to St. Anthony Regional Cancer Center for the memory garden in December 2020.  We are glad to say that Morgan Bauer, Kaia Davis, Kerrigan Irlbeck and Megan Scott received an A on their project.

Morgan is daughter of Alison and Jeff Bauer, and Kaia is a daughter of Sarah and Spencer Davis, Kerrigan is daughter of Kourtney Payer and Scott Irlbeck, and Megan is a daughter of Susie and Curt Scott.

Department SpotlightFinancial Accounting DeptSt. Anthony Financial Accounting Department

There are four full-time staff and one part time staff in the Financial Accounting Department. In case you didn't know, our offices are located on the 4th floor of the Surgery Center Building next to the Human Resources offices.

The biggest challenge our department faces is due to the constant changes in reimbursement by all the insurance payers.

Our department is most proud of when we have a successful financial audit each year.

Something this department does that no one realizes is that we are accountable for ALL receipts and ALL disbursements for the Hospital, Nursing Home, Orchard View, Garden View, and the Foundation. Whew!

The PlateThis month, let's talk about what is considered a "whole grain"

Whole grains contain three parts: the bran, the germ and the endosperm (refined grains only contain the endosperm). The bran and germ help keep your body healthy, your skin glowing and your hair shiny. Including whole grains as part of a healthy diet can help reduce the risk for heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.

Be a savvy consumer when buying whole grains — words like multi-grain, stone-ground, 100% wheat, cracked wheat, seven-grain and bran don't necessarily indicate a whole-grain food. Color also is not a reliable way to pick a whole-grain product. Sometimes molasses or other added ingredients give a food that nice brown color.

Celebrate Healthy Aging MonthHealthy aging

According to, Healthy Aging Month was designated to focus on the positive aspects of growing older. You should act how you feel, not necessarily act your age. It's all about having a healthy body as well as a healthy mind tying in both physical health and mental health.

Tips for Healthy Living As One Ages:

  • Get Moving - consult with your doctor on what type of activity is best for you.
  • Maintain a Healthy Diet - Eat more vegetables and fruit and keep your portion sizes down.
  • Socialize - Keep your friend connection or make new friends.
  • Keep Your Mind and Body Moving - Keep your mind active by reading, doing puzzles as well as pick up a low-impact activity like yoga to help keep your flexibility and balance.
  • Get Regular Check-ups - If you're not feeling well, go to your doctor and don't neglect your medical checkups.

Each generation is proving that the more active you are, the more vibrant and healthy you remain.
