July 2022 - The Pulse
A Farewell Note from Ed Smith
Dear St. Anthony Family,
As my time at St. Anthony comes to a close I write to thank all of you for what has been a
gratifying 34 years. I don’t have any words of wisdom or profound thoughts as I look back on my career. Instead, I share my heartfelt appreciation for the privilege of working with you - St. Anthony employees, medical staff, Franciscan Sisters, volunteers, and Board members. Coworkers became friends, friends became family. St. Anthony is a family with a strong commitment to our community and region. I am proud of the excellent work we accomplished together as it’s made a difference in the lives of others.
Moving forward I am confident that St. Anthony is in great hands with the leadership of Allen Anderson as President and CEO.
It’s truly been a privilege and honor to work beside each and every one of you. You have brightened my life, and I have treasured our time together. I look forward to seeing you on the trail.
Sincerely,
Ed Smith

Purdue University Global School of Nursing and DAISY to Sponsor St. Anthony
An established leader in online nursing education, the Purdue University Global School of Nursing believes in supporting the recognition of admirable individuals in the nursing industry.
That’s why the school is partnering with The DAISY Foundation™ to co-sponsor select hospitals that participate in the DAISY Award® program, which celebrates the extraordinary compassion nurses provide their patients and families every day.
The Purdue University Global School of Nursing will financially underwrite a hospital’s participation in the DAISY Award program for at least three years by covering the following expenses:
- Award cost.
- Administrative costs of joining the DAISY Award network.
- Program orientation, training, marketing materials and more from The DAISY Foundation.
In addition, DAISY Award honorees will receive 25% off tuition in any Purdue University Global School of Nursing program.
Purdue University Global’s first participant in this initiative is St. Anthony Regional Hospital.
“Nursing care is invaluable to the outcomes of patients, and a nurse’s calling is more than just a job,” said Scott A. Ellis, vice president of patient services and chief nursing officer for St. Anthony Regional Hospital. “It is important to recognize the extraordinary work the St. Anthony Regional Hospital nurses perform in every area. We are proud to partner with Purdue University Global to recognize our extraordinary nurses with the DAISY Award.”

Home Health & Hospice
Home Health & Hospice has 14 full-time, 2 part-time, and 2 relief employees.
Here's what the Home Health & Hospice Team has to say:
Biggest Challenge: Caring for sicker patients and trying to avoid them being readmitted to the hospital. Also, keeping up with ever- changing conditions of participation.
HHH is most proud of: Our patient care, going above for patients and families. We have a very quick referral to admit time. Director of Home Health and Hospice, Nikki Schwering says, "I am proud of our team for adapting to the challenges and changes with COVID regarding home visits. H.O.P.E.S was able to continue to see families virtually, and they continued this for almost 2 years!!"
Things we do that no one realizes: Our nurses and aides travel 30 miles from Carroll. We see patients primarily in their homes but serve all assisted living and long-term care facilities too.
Fun Facts:
- The Carroll County Nest is located in the Home Care and Hospice offices, which is open to any mother in Carroll County and it’s FREE. The nest is a rewards program in which parents earn points by attending prenatal and well baby visits and promoting self-care!
- We have a nurse on call 24/7

St. Anthony Foundation News: 24th Annual Golf Classic - A Success!
A record-setting year with $91,415 raised!
The 24th annual St. Anthony Golf Classic held on Monday, June 27, 2022, at the Carroll Country Club, raised a record-breaking $91,415. Additional funds were received after the conclusion of Monday’s event which raised the amount from what is pictured. In honor of the recent retirement of St. Anthony President and CEO, Ed Smith, proceeds from this event created the Ed Smith Staff Recognition and Retention Fund. The need for this initiative was realized during the past two years of watching St. Anthony staff work through challenges brought on by a pandemic. This fund will be used to provide encouragement and appreciation for St. Anthony employees.
A big thank you to all of the volunteers who made the golf outing a BIG success!
