Provides anesthesia care for patients undergoing surgical experiences and offers consultative services to other areas of the hospital requesting assistance in areas pertaining to anesthesia.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Develops and maintains departmental budget.
Performs employee evaluations to assure competency and positive growth in Anesthesia Services staff.
Assures staff are oriented and competent at all times.
Works collaboratively with Surgical Services Director to assure an efficient and safe patient flow.
Directs anesthesia staff to provide efficient and safe patient care. Hires, mentors and evaluates staff.
Assists in establishing new and the refinements of existing programs, policies and operating procedures.
Represents anesthesia services at committee meetings and as a liaison with other department regarding patient care and organization functions.
Examines and interviews patient to determine degree of anesthetic risk, and formulates a plan of care that best meets the needs of the patient and surgeon.
Administers safe anesthesia including induction, maintenance, emergence airway management, nerve blocks and monitored anesthesia care.
Demonstrates competency in the areas of airway management, I.V. access and invasive monitoring line placement both in and out of the operating room environment.
Documents all patient care activities appropriately in the EMR.
Provides consultative services for acute and chronic pain management as needed.
Demonstrates appropriate airway management skills for: neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
Demonstrates appropriate anesthesia care plan and delivery for: neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
Develops appropriate post-operative pain management for: neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
Develops, implements, monitors and makes improvement for the Anesthesia Services performance Improvement Program.
Serves as a resource to staff, interpreting philosophy goals, standards, policies and procedures in accordance with hospital mission and values. Maintains department policies, personnel and procedures that comply with local, state, federal and other standards.
Completes all other duties as assigned.
Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.
Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and standards of care guidelines.
Attends mandatory meetings and programs.
Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.
Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Teamwork and customer service excellence a must.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Graduate of an approved school of nursing and nurse anesthesia program. Five years anesthesia experience required. Managerial experience preferred, Master’s prepared, Doctorate preferred. Three years leadership experience required.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, patients, families, regulatory agencies, or members of the community. Ability to effectively present information to management, the public and/or board of directors.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS, CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Licensed as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in the State of Iowa.
Certified by the American Association of Nurse Anesthesia as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
BCLS and ACLS upon hire.
PALS and NRP within 6 months of hire.
