Job Description

SUMMARY: Provides Behavioral health nursing assessments in the Emergency Department. Coordinates patient admissions and bed placement on the Behavioral Medicine Unit.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Assist with the mental health care of patients presenting to and remaining in the ED by fulfilling the following:

Will complete initial mental health assessment/evaluation of mental health patients in the Emergency Department upon notification of the ED Staff

Will assess/evaluate all behavioral health patients who remain in the ED every 4 hours following the initial assess/evaluation. The case should be reviewed with the on call psychiatric provider

Will review each case with the on call psychiatric provider and/or the Emergency Department physician and assist in treatment planning and disposition from the Emergency Department

Assist in finding mental health placement and transportation for those patients required to transfer from St. Anthony

Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies ED nurse or physician of patient's condition

Initiates patient education and treatment care plan according to the individualized needs of the patients

Assists with obtaining court orders and e-filing system

Responds to behavioral health emergencies as needed throughout the hospital

Manages all requests for referrals to St. Anthony BMU by completing any or all of the following:

Assures Inclusion/Exclusion criteria are followed accurately

Gathers the patient information and reviews each case with the on call psychiatric provider

Assists with the admission process for all new patients

Completes all initial utilization review processes and concurrent review

Completes referral log book completely and accurately

Requests assistance from Director or designee for decision making as appropriate

Assists with other patient care duties on BMU whenever possible to include but not limited to:

Accepts and manages all crisis calls received by the BMU

Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient

Makes all follow up phone calls to post discharge patients from the BMU

Assists with quality monitoring and reporting duties under the supervision of the Director

Takes vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assesses condition of patient

Assists with obtaining court orders and e-filing system

Assists with group activities

Assist with patient medications as requested by RNs

Records, transcribes and checks all physician order on patient's chart

Uses restraints safely and according to Hospital policy

Participates in unit performance improvement activities


RN with a minimum of 2 years behavioral health nursing experience preferred. Psychiatric nursing certification preferred.


Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.

Current license as a professional nurse in the State of Iowa.

BCLS certification upon hire.

Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior upon hire.
