Interpreter/Translator Certificate required.

Job Summary

The Medical Interpreter provides accurate interpretation and translation of critical medical information in direct service to the physician and/or other healthcare providers who are seeing patients who cannot speak or understand English.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Precisely and accurately interprets critical medical advice and information given by the provider into equivalent terminology in the patient’s native language. 

• Assists in translating medical text from English on behalf of internal and external customers; may translate patient education information as specifically requested. 

• Establishes and maintains quality service and positive interaction with all patients, customers, visitors, health care providers, and clinical employees. 

• Assists with patient follow-up as necessary, to include the following: contacting patients for appointment reminders, obtaining correct billing information, payment at the time of service, and transparency. 

• Discuss payment at the time of services and transparency requirements. 

• Gathers, develops, and maintains lists of terminology and information that may be used in technical translations such as legal or medical materials.

• Maintains strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and CCMH policies and standards. 

• Participates, as a condition of assignment, in continuing annual medical interpreter/translator training. 

• Provides occasional services outside of normal working hours on an as-needed basis. 

• Practices and behaves in a professional, safe and ethical manner at all times.

• Serves as a patient advocate.

• Participates in performance improvement and educational activities. Completes all CEU’s as required by respective licensure. If licensed, maintains an active and current license.

• Works willingly and accepts assignments as given.

• Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.

• Participates in opportunities that enhance personal and professional growth.

• Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.

• Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.

• Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards.

• Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.

• Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

• High school diploma, GED, or similar certification required.

• Interpreter/Translator Certificate required.

• At least 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

Position Requirements, Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

• Fluency in and thorough understanding of the primary language(s) being translated.

• Superior verbal and written communication skills in the applicable languages.

• Excellent listening skills and auditory recall to remember spoken words and to accurately reproduce them in the desired language.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

• Ability to appropriately understand and respond to culturally sensitive situations, perspectives, and phrases.

• Ability to work well under pressure and in intense situations.

Language Skills

Fluency in and thorough understanding of the primary language(s) being translated. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, patients, families and the general public.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Other Requirements

May be required to train in and float to other areas within the department or other assigned areas and provide extra support and/or coverage as needed.
