Job Summary

The Patient Registration Clerk assists patients during the admissions process, gathers required patient information, and coordinates with nurses and other employees to ensure patients complete the proper paperwork. This position assists with patient scheduling and provides effective customer service for all facilities, patients, and visitors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Greet, register, instruct and provide general assistance to patients while providing superior customer service and respect to patients and families.

• Handles telephone calls in a timely manner, connecting caller to appropriate floor or department; pages individuals as needed.  Ensures information taken is accurate and kept confidential. Maintains the physician Preference Call Sheet.  Maintains the daily On Call List.

• Admits inpatients and outpatients by preparing admitting form, ID bracelet. Appropriately bands all patients meeting the banding criteria. Transfers patients to treatment destination.   Obtains appropriate signatures and insurance information and distributes Hospital packet to patient.  Ensures accuracy of all demographics.

• Effectively verify and communicate to patients and their family insurance eligibility, filing, collections, and payment responsibilities.

• Responds to emergency situations quickly and appropriately by identifying and responding to alarms and codes, making necessary announcements and contacting appropriate personnel. Supervises in house emergency alarms for in house, local and state emergencies.

• Responds to emergency situations such as ambulance calls and patients arriving by car by alerting the appropriate personnel as ordered by the supervisor.

• Verifies the daily hospital census statistics for accuracy. Retrieves online patient communications and forwards to the patients.

• Assists with accurate preparation of charges, sorting and processing in a timely manner.

• Assists patients in making new medical appointments and changes or cancels appointments as necessary.

• Works willingly and accepts assignments as given.

• Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.

• Participates in opportunities that enhance personal and professional growth.

• Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.

• Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.

• Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards.

• Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.

• Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

• High school diploma, GED, or similar certification required, one year certificate from a college or technical school preferred; with three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position Requirements, License, Certification, Registration

• Detail-oriented and professional.

• Exceptional communication skills and phone etiquette.

• Computer skills, including knowledge of or ability to learn various software applications.

• Basic understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing.

Language Skills

Ability to read analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before customers, patients, families and employees of the organization.

Computer work is frequent.

Regularly works in an office setting with frequent interaction with employees, patients, volunteers, and the public. 

Due to the nature of business in a health care setting, although risk is minimal, any employee of St. Anthony may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, blood borne pathogens, unpleasant sights, odors, and/or materials in patient care and/or provider work areas.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
