Job Description

Every 3rd weekend. 

SUMMARY Provides nursing care to patients in a medical facility by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Explains procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding and allay apprehension.

Administers prescribed medications and treatments according to policy.

Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment and examination of patient.

Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient.

Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies supervisor or physician of patient's condition.

Takes vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assesses condition of patient.

Responds to life saving situation based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures and protocols.

Documents nursing history and physical assessment for assigned patients.

Initiates patient education and treatment care plan according to the individualized needs of the patients.

Conducts groups on anxiety, grief, stress, etc.

Uses restraints safely and according to Hospital policy.

Records, transcribes and checks all physician order on patient's chart.

Participates in unit performance improvement activities.

Completes all other duties as assigned.

Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.

Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations.

Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.

Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.

Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate's degree (A. A.) or graduate of a school of nursing.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, patients, families and the general public.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS/CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current licensed as a professional nurse in the State of Iowa.
  • BCLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) required within 6 months of hire.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, combative patients and blood-borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Previous psychiatric nursing experience or one year or more previous med/surg nursing experience, or psychiatric nurse certification preferred.
