SUMMARY: Registered nurse who oversees the daily staffing and patient care on a shift basis. Under the general supervision of the director provides staffing management, patient placement, and serves as a management designee in the absence of the director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Complies with established nursing standards and demonstrates a comprehensive scope of skills and knowledge in the management of patient care.
Makes patient assignments based on patient needs and acuity, as well as staff competence, continuity of care, and skill level.
Serves as a resource person and/or preceptor for other staff.
Acts as a management designee in the absence of the director.
Assists director with revising and creating new policies/procedures.
Supervises and performs competency evaluations for staff. Assists the director in completing staff performance reviews.
Provides direct patient care when needed.
Assists physicians with specialized procedures.
Works independently and effectively with minimal supervision and is cost effective in the use of time and supplies.
Makes appropriate staffing decisions based on patient needs, staffing skill mix, geographic location of patients in pods, staff competence levels, staffing guidelines, and/or any other factors that may impact a given shift.
Ensures that all nursing staff are in compliance with their respective job descriptions.
Facilitates documentation of variance reports ensuring proper notification of physicians, director, and quality management staff.
Participates in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the unit’s quality management program.
Supports the director’s goals as well as other hospital and administrative initiatives.
Attends leadership education and/or other in-services at the request of the director.
Acts as a professional role model using effective communication with co-workers, other departments, physicians, and patients and families.
Focuses on providing excellent customer service and holds that expectation to those in your supervision.
Provides immediate feedback, recognition, or discipline when necessary.
Participates in planning and setting goals for the unit.
Consults with and keep director informed of unit activity and any problems that arise.
Attempts to accompany physician on rounds and keeps physician informed of patients’ status.
Completes all other duties as assigned.
Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.
Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations.
Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.
Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.
Maintains the confidentiality of patient, employees and organizational information.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include peer interviewing, training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems in the absence of the Director.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Minimum of Associates Degree in Nursing. BSN recommended.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before customers, patients, families and employees of the organization.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Graduate of an accredited school for professional nursing.
Currently licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Iowa.
Minimum of 2 years nursing experience. 3 years med/surg experience required.
PALS certification within 1 year of employment.
ACLS certification within 6 months of employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock and blood-borne pathogens.
