Job Description

SUMMARY: Consults with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide medical nutrition therapy to patients, residents, & outpatients with various diseases and nutritional needs. Provides nutritional screening, assessment, reassessment, and education for patients, residents and families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Consults with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide medical nutrition therapy to patients, residents, & outpatients with various diseases and nutritional needs. Provides nutritional screening, assessment, reassessment, and education for patients, residents and families. Plans therapeutic diets in accordance with physician’s diagnoses and requirements of regulatory agencies.

Provides nutrition education to patients, residents, family members, staff, and the community about nutrition principles, food selection, food preparation, and diet restrictions.

Provides consultation to the Diet Clerks regarding nutrition-care orders, patient/resident menu correction, and patient/resident nourishment needs.

Participates in a Patient/Resident Meal Performance Improvement Program programs to ensure high quality meals served at the appropriate temperature and in an attractive manner.

Provides Consulting Registered Dietitian services to external organizations, for St. Anthony Regional Hospital

Coordinates and evaluates patient/resident food service standards to ensure patient/resident satisfaction with meals and nourishment’s and initiates action to correct any problems.

Presents in-service education programs for food service and other healthcare staff to provide continuing education and training and a safe working environment. Complies with all local, state and federal government regulations.

Inspects food service areas to maintain quality standards and sanitation regulations.

Completes all other duties as assigned.

Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.

Recognizes and adopts activities appropriate to the specific needs of the patient/resident population and demonstrates knowledge of specific issues directly related to age of patient/resident population.

Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations.

Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.

Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position assumes may carry out clinical dietetic supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws in the absence of the Clinical Dietetic Supervisor. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Position requires a Bachelor’s degree and be a Registered Dietitian with the American Dietetic Association and a Licensed Dietitian in the state of Iowa. (Register or License eligible) will meet the education requirement. Ability to communicate (both verbal and written) effectively with superiors, sub-ordinates, and customers. Ability to write business letters, summaries and reports, using prescribed format and conform to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Requires effective management and leadership skills and the ability to work with confidential employee and employer information.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write formal correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, patients, families and other employees of the organization.
