Sherri Grothe Named Phlebotomist of the Year
Iowa Society of Clinical Laboratory Sciences has named Sherri Grothe, of St. Anthony Regional Hospital, as Phlebotomist of the Year. This distinguished award recognizes phlebotomists who are both the legs and the face of the laboratory in healthcare. Quality laboratory testing depends a great deal on their skills. Also, as a part of the caregiving team, a patient’s impression of the laboratory and its staff is often determined by their interaction with the person who draws their blood for testing (the phlebotomist).

St. Anthony Hosts Diabetes Awareness Education Event on Monday, January 13th
Nearly 2200 people in Carroll County have diabetes and 880 people are yet undiagnosed. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 42% of all adults now have diabetes or pre-diabetes, and of persons born in 2000, one in three persons will develop diabetes during their lifetime if current trends continue. The rising incidence of diabetes has generated a strong public interest in learning how to live well with diabetes, providing the basis for a free community education event hosted by St. Anthony Regional Hospital. The program, titled “Discouraged to Encouraged – Managing Diabetes in Real Life,” is planned for Monday, January 13th, 4:00 – 5:30 pm. Participants will learn strategies to simplify and become more effective in their personal approach to diabetes self-care. The program will be presented by Dr. Mark Collison, Adult Medicine Specialist – St. Anthony Clinic, along with St. Anthony Diabetes Center staff members, Deb Dieter, RN, Certified Diabetes Educator, and Addie Sparks, Registered Dietitian.

St. Anthony Hosts Diabetes Awareness Education Event on January 13
Dr. Collison urges people with diabetes, along with their family members, to attend the upcoming program, “Many people find having diabetes to be challenging and often frustrating. To control blood sugar and its effect on long term health, it’s important that people have both information to better understand diabetes and the skills to do to manage it in the long term.” He adds, ”Type 2 diabetes is strongly associated with healthy lifestyle behaviors, but we recognize that sometimes even the best efforts don’t always yield measureable results, and this can be discouraging. Our goal is to help people feel empowered and positive as they make necessary lifestyle changes.” The program will be held at the St. Anthony Education Center, located on the fourth floor of the Surgery Building. Covered parking is available on the lower levels of the building. Anyone with an interest in learning more about diabetes health is encouraged to attend the program. Reservations for the program are recommended, but not required. Call 712-794-5243, or send an email to education@stanthonyhospital.org to reserve a seat or to request more information.

No Ebola Cases in Carroll County; Preparation Continues
Carroll County Public Health continues to work closely with the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), health care professionals, and local officials in response to the West African Ebola situation. Despite what you might read on social media or hear around the water cooler, there are and have been NO cases of Ebola in Carroll County or Iowa. Screening of travelers coming from Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia is being done at international airports at the time of arrival in the U.S. They are asked about things like current symptoms and possible exposures to patients with Ebola while in West Africa. If needed, appropriate action is taken at that time; for example, travelers with symptoms consistent with Ebola are not being allowed to continue until they are medically assessed. If they are well, they are given information about what to do once they arrive at their final destination – such as Iowa. If, for example, that patient is traveling to Carroll County, our public health officials are notified of the arrival of the traveler. The traveler is then re-interviewed to confirm their health status and their risk of exposure to Ebola. Appropriate action is then taken in Iowa, such as the traveler staying at home and away from others for 21 days. Carroll County Public Health does have a process in place to take the temperatures of patients while in isolation twice daily, until the 21 day period is complete.
