St. Anthony Awards Healthcare Scholarships

The scholarships, presented by Gary Riedmann, hospital president, were made on behalf of the St. Anthony Foundation and the Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation (IHERF).

Sara Fleecs, RN, and Deb Adams, RN, were among 32 college students from all parts of Iowa to receive a $3,000 Iowa Hospital Association sponsored IHERF scholarship. Ms. Fleecs has completed her Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialty degree at Briar Cliff University.  Deb Adams is currently working toward completion of her Nurse Practitioner’s degree at Briar Cliff.  “We’re very proud of Sara and Deb, and of the part they play in the delivery of  high quality patient care at St. Anthony,” said Karen Timm, Vice President for Patient Services. “We congratulate both Sara and Deb on the success of their studies and for being selected as an IHERF scholarship winners.”

Scholarships awarded by the St. Anthony Foundation include:

Paige Potthoff, was awarded the $1,000 Elizabeth Riedmann Healthcare scholarship. She is a 2007 Kuemper Catholic High School graduate, attending Creighton University in Omaha, NE. She will graduate in May 2011 with a degree in Nursing.

Amy Smith, recipient of the $500 Margaret Seidl Healthcare Scholarship, is a 2010 Carroll High School graduate and a Certified Nursing Assistant at St. Anthony Nursing Home. She will be attending Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll for a degree as a Registered Nurse.

The St. Anthony Foundation awarded a $500 scholarship to Jessie Sterns, a 2010 Carroll High School graduate working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at St. Anthony Regional Hospital and New Hope Village.

Amanda Sieve, a 2004 North Polk High School graduate and student at Des Moines Area Community College received the Mary Thaler Yates scholarship for $500. She is an employee of New Hope Village.

The families of the Elizabeth Riedmann, Margaret Seidl and Mary Thaler Yates established healthcare scholarships through the St. Anthony Foundation. The Riedmann scholarship is presented each year to an applicant who is pursuing a career in a healthcare field; the Seidl scholarship is presented annually to a student enrolled in a nursing program. The St. Anthony Foundation presents scholarships annually to students pursuing a profession in healthcare. Each scholarship was established to encourage the development of healthcare professionals. “This year we had an exceptional field of applicants and we are extremely pleased to award these scholarships,” said Trish Roberts, Development Director at St. Anthony.
