Sharon, an experienced educator, earned a Masters of Science degree in Counselor Education and a PK-12 administrative license from Iowa State University. For the past seven years, she has worked as a high school counselor and registrar at Prairie Valley High School, in Gowrie, Iowa. From 1989-2002, she worked as the Learning Center Director-at Risk Counselor coordinator at Kuemper Catholic Schools. She also spent several years as the Kuemper consumer science teacher.

The West Central Iowa AHEC is a joint effort between St. Anthony Regional Hospital and Des Moines University, providing services to fourteen counties in west central Iowa. The AHEC participates as part of a state and national network of centers, working to recruit, train and retain healthcare professionals in underserved areas. Currently 45 states offer AHEC programs. The St. Anthony location is the third operational DMU-affiliated AHEC in the state. Other DMU AHEC Program centers are based at Broadlawns Hospital, in Des Moines, and at Allen Hospital, in Waterloo.

Sharon and two additional staff members will develop programs and activities to teach children about healthcare careers, offer clinical training sites for health profession students and support healthcare practitioners with continuing education offerings. “I am thrilled to be a part of the new AHEC program in the Carroll area. By working with the AHEC I look forward to assisting local and area individuals to explore, experience, and study health related careers as I help youth and adults secure awareness and services concerning health related occupations.” Sharon said.

Sharon and her husband, Raymond, have lived on their 150 year old family farm and raised four children in the Carroll community. All four children graduated from the local parochial schools and have pursued careers and education in nursing (Melissa), mechanics (Mike), and UP railroad (Albert). Their youngest daughter, Alise, will graduate from Iowa State University next year in agriculture education and was recently married to a local farmer. “We both feel that Carroll is a wonderful place to live with vast opportunities,” said Sharon.
