Ed Smith Named President and CEO

Friday, 14 September 2012

Smith succeeds Gary Riedmann, who served as St. Anthony’s President and CEO before his retirement earlier this year.  Since then Smith has served as Interim CEO of the organization, sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration of LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

Smith joined St. Anthony as Vice President and CFO in 1988, serving in that role before being named Senior Vice President in 2011.    He earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and holds a Masters Degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota.  In addition to his role at St. Anthony, Smith served as Mayor of Carroll from 2000 to 2006.   He and his wife, Vicki, have four children, ages 19 through 26.

Immediate Past Board Chair and Chair of the CEO Succession Planning Committee, Art Neu stated, “We entered into the process of a national search knowing Ed was a leading candidate but felt it was the responsibility of the Board to compare his credentials and assess his readiness for the job against a slate of top healthcare executives from around the country.  The search firm we worked with presented some outstanding candidates. The search committee and the Board of Directors couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome and are very excited about the future of St. Anthony with Ed in the top role.”

“I am honored to accept the position of President and CEO of this remarkable organization.  St. Anthony has a great history and a bright future,” according to Smith. “I look forward to working with the Franciscan Sisters, the hospital and foundation board, the medical staff, and our employees to build on St. Anthony’s tradition of delivering outstanding high-quality patient centered care.”

St. Anthony Regional Hospital was founded as a non-profit, acute care hospital in 1905 by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration.  Today, St. Anthony operates as a 99-bed general acute care hospital and a 79-bed nursing facility.  St. Anthony also owns and operates Orchard View, a 50-unit residential retirement housing facility located adjacent to the hospital
