St. Anthony Family Care Physicians Announces Reach Out and Read Program

Tuesday, 07 August 2012

Over 400 children age 6 months through 5 years old will be served through the Reach Out and Read program, a national evidence-based school readiness program. All of the providers at Family Care Physicians Clinic will give children and families an age- and developmentally-appropriate book at the time of their well-child exam. Providers also will provide parents with anticipatory guidance about the importance of reading every day with their child.

An additional component of the Reach Out and Read model is a literacy-rich waiting room. Thanks to a partnership with Iowa Public Television, kids spending time in the waiting room of the new Reach Out and Read Iowa program at St. Anthony Family Care Physicians in Carroll, Iowa in will have new resources available to help them learn while they wait to see their doctor.

Reach Out and Read Iowa has partnered with Iowa Public Television to put “IPTV Raising Readers Learning Centers” throughout the state at 23 Reach Out and Read Iowa programs since Fall 2010. The Raising Readers Learning Centers enhance existing Reach Out and Read Literacy-Rich Waiting Rooms in the health clinics. Reach Out and Read Iowa works with doctors to “prescribe” books and family reading time.  The Learning Centers feature a cart of age-appropriate children’s materials, including books, activity books, toys, puzzles, and more. They will also include a flat-screen television and DVD player, allowing children and families the opportunity to experience Iowa Public Television’s high-quality children’s programming.

A pre-cursor to the Reach Out and Read program was undertaken at the clinic by Hope Jensen, ARNP, earlier this year, with the help of Chuck Mounce, who provided funds to purchase an assortment of books, and with advice from Kelly Fischbach, Carroll Library Director. The Reach Out and Read program will continue and enhance the outreach to parents to take time to read, laugh and share books with their children.
