Karen Pawletzki Named Hospice Volunteer of the Year

Wednesday, 13 June 2012

Karen Pawletzki was also honored as the 2012 Hospice Volunteer of the Year. St. Anthony Regional Hospice volunteers offer hours of support, companionship and dignity to patients and families who are facing serious and life-limiting illness. Currently, 32 hospice volunteers graciously share their time and energy to serve patients and families at the bedside, to assist in the office, to help raise hospice awareness and contribute to educational programs at St. Anthony.

Patty Hauswirth, Hospice Nurse Manager, spoke to volunteers and guests about the success that St. Anthony Hospice has experienced through the years. Ms. Hauswirth highlighted successful new programs that have been implemented since January 2012, including the Children’s Grief Workshop, memory pillows, music therapy, and massage therapy.

Stacie Daily, Volunteer Coordinator, recognized the compassion that each volunteer shows, saying “Hospice volunteers play an indispensable role in helping St. Anthony offer the best care possible for patients living with life-limiting illness, their families and caregivers. By sharing their time, energy and expertise, our volunteers bring compassion and caring to the lives of those in need.”

In her remarks to the volunteers, Marcia Schaefer, Director of St. Anthony Home Health, Hospice and Public Health, encouraged hospice volunteers to remember that, in the midst of caring for others, they should also set aside time to take care of themselves.  Ms. Shafer led the group in a yoga exercise and thanked the volunteers for their dedication to the many people touched by St. Anthony Hospice.

The evening ended with drawing for door prizes. Winners were Denise Muhlbauer, Howard Johnson, Shirley Lutwitze, Ed Miller, June Bernholtz, and Arlene Dalhoff.
