Ultimately, Sue determined that her faith sustained her well-being and gave her hope to carry on. So, through her Will, she left a gift of one-third of her estate to benefit St. Anthony, with a hope to provide educational opportunities for current or future health care providers. One-third of the estate was gifted to St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin, and the final one-third was left to her beloved St. Mary's Parish Church in Willey, Iowa that had been a source of strength for the entire Bayer household including sisters, Edith, Loretta and brother, Phil. Each of these worthy recipients will use this remembrance from the Bayer’s to make lives like Sue, Edith, Loretta and Phil's a bit better for having been here with us.
“Sue’s generous gift will help St. Anthony offer important education and training opportunities for our staff,” said Ed Smith, Interim CEO at St. Anthony.  “We also work closely with the healthcare training programs at Des Moines Area Community College, Western Iowa Tech, Iowa Central Community College and others to assure that students entering the workforce have access to advanced simulation technology, as well as practical knowledge in caring for patients. Our endowment is critical to help pay for education programs which we believe will lead to high quality patient care.”
“Sue is a great example of someone who worked closely with her trusted advisor, Carroll Attorney Robert Peters, to develop an estate plan that was up to date and nothing was left to chance,” said Trish Roberts, St. Anthony Development Director.
The first step to establishing an estate plan or updating a Will is to have a conversation that may include a team of trusted professional advisors.  It is important to bring in individuals who have expertise in different areas including financial planning and legal advice. Ultimately, your attorney will draft the legal documents.  Including family members in the discussion may assure that your final wishes are carried out in the manner you have chosen.
