Cancer Information and Support Program Features Dr. Robert Behrens, Medical Oncologist

Tuesday, 28 February 2012

For most people, a cancer diagnosis can be an overwhelming experience. Fear of the effects of the disease and its treatments, and concern over role changes at home or at work can make people feel isolated and alone, at a time when they need others most. The opportunity to share experiences and concerns with others who are able to understand can ease the sense of loneliness and stress.

“Sharing the Cancer Journey” is a newly organized program which provides information and support for people who are facing cancer and their caregivers. Monthly meetings are a place to learn about cancer and cancer treatments, to gain positive coping skills, and to exchange information and ideas with those who have had similar experiences.

Dr. Robert Behrens, Medical Oncologist, will lead the initial meeting discussion, entitled “Understanding Your Diagnosis – Talking with Your Doctor,” on Monday, March 12 at 5:15 – 6:15 pm. Participants will gain tools they can use to help them better understand their cancer and treatment options.

Sponsored by St. Anthony and Alegent Cancer Care Services, this is the first in an ongoing series of cancer information and support sessions. Meetings will be held on the second Monday of the month in the St. Anthony Education Center, located on the fourth floor of the Surgery Building. Parking is available in the covered garage on the lower levels of the Center. Refreshments will be provided.

Pre-registration for the upcoming session of Sharing the Cancer Journey is not required. However, those seeking additional information about the program, or to learn about other cancer resources, are invited to contact Education Services at 794-5243, or by email at education@stanthonyhospital.org for more information.
