St. Anthony’s commitment to providing high quality patient care by advancing healthcare education opportunities was demonstrated as five scholarships were presented to students who are studying for healthcare careers. Gary Riedmann, St. Anthony President, made the presentations on behalf of the St. Anthony Foundation and the Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation (IHERF).

Sara Fleecs, RN, an employee of St. Anthony Regional Hospital, was one of 24 students from Iowa to receive a $3,000 Iowa Hospital Association sponsored IHERF scholarship. Ms. Fleecs is studying for her Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialty degree at Briar Cliff University. “We’re very proud of Sara and of the part she plays in delivering high quality patient care at St. Anthony,” said Joyce Ryberg, Vice President for Patient Services. “We congratulate her on the success of her studies and for being selected as one of the IHERF scholarship winners.”

Scholarships awarded by the St. Anthony Foundation include:

Ann Lengeling, who was awarded the $1,000 Elizabeth Riedmann Healthcare scholarship, is a 1999 Carroll High School graduate, and is employed as a certified nursing assistant in the medical, surgical and pediatric departments at St. Anthony Regional Hospital.

Kelsey Zubrod, recipient of the $500 Margaret Seidl Healthcare Scholarship, is a Kuemper High School graduate and is also a certified nursing assistant in the Alzheimer’s unit at St. Anthony Nursing Home.

The St. Anthony Foundation awarded two additional $500 scholarships to Jessica Fehring, a Carroll High School graduate, and to Haylee Barnard, a 2007 Manning High School graduate and student at Des Moines Area Community College.

The families of the Elizabeth Riedmann and Margaret Seidl established the healthcare scholarships through the St. Anthony Foundation. The Riedmann scholarship is presented each year to an applicant who is pursuing a career in a healthcare field; the Seidl scholarship is presented annually to a student enrolled in a nursing program. The St. Anthony Foundation presents scholarships annually to students pursuing a profession in healthcare. Each scholarship was established to encourage the development of healthcare professionals. “This year we had an exceptional field of applicants and we are extremely pleased to award these scholarships,” said Trish Roberts, Development Director at St. Anthony.
