New CT, MRI and 3D/4D Ultrasound at St. Anthony

Thursday, 12 January 2012

In an effort to bring the best in imaging technology to the Carroll area, St. Anthony has already put into use a new 3D/4D ultrasound and has just completed the installation of a new 64-slice CT scanner. With those two improvements in place, the process of beginning to install a new Siemans MRI is underway.

All of the projects are designed to improve exams for patients by using a lower dose of radiation, providing more detailed images in less time, and accommodating larger patients with more comfort. “The new equipment and technology is exciting,” said Nancy Malloy, Radiology Department Director. “But keeping our services running smoothly during the installation of the equipment and training of staff is often challenging. St. Anthony has worked closely with vendors, construction workers, physicians and staff to make sure our patients receive uninterrupted radiology services during the construction and installation process.”

A mobile unit for CT scans was brought in for a short time to allow for the installation of the new 64-slice CT scanner. Similarly, a mobile MRI scanner will be on campus for patients while the change from the old to new MRI takes place. “We have been lucky this year to have mild weather which made transporting patients to the mobile units much easier,” said Malloy.

Installation of the MRI is expected to be complete in February. The new unit will bring quieter operations and faster scan times.  Patients will notice the scanner’s opening is larger and shorter, which helps ease claustrophobia and gives increased weight tolerance for more comfort.

The 3D/4D ultrasound improves testing for diagnoses in vascular, thyroid, abdominal, pelvic and testicular exams. In obstetrics, the 3D/4D ultrasound is used to identify important information about mother and baby. The new ultrasound technology lets expectant parents see their baby smile, yawn, suck their fingers, and even open their eyes.
