St. Anthony and Des Moines University Establish West Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC)

Monday, 30 March 2009

The Iowa AHEC network includes the Northeast Iowa, West Central and Northwest Central centers coordinated by Des Moines University. The AHEC staff work with teachers to expose students in grades K-12 to the world of healthcare by providing programs and activities designed to nurture students’ interest in healthcare and provide age-appropriate learning activities.  The Center also offers clinical training sites to link students studying in health professions and potential employers and offers support, resources and connections for established healthcare practitioners.

Gary Riedmann, St. Anthony President, said, “The partnership with Des Moines University has proven to be very valuable in meeting St. Anthony’s commitment to provide the highest quality healthcare services and a highly trained staff to care for area residents. These ongoing educational opportunities will help assure that our goals of recruiting quality healthcare providers will be met in the future. ”

Area Health Education Programs were developed by Congress and have received annual

federal funding since 1972. The Carroll location will serve the surrounding 14 county area, and be staffed by three full time positions which will be funded through a federal grant to administer the program.
