Tuesday, 17 May 2011

On behalf of the Sheryl M. Venner Stoolman Scholarship Fund and the family of Sheryl Stoolman, the St. Anthony Foundation has awarded two scholarships to students pursuing nursing degrees. Receiving the 2011 nursing scholarships are Megan Croghan of Manilla and Stephanie Brincks of Carroll.

“Our family would like to thank everyone who has given memorial donations for Sheryl, knowing that her passion for nursing and emergency care will be carried on by these fine young people,” said Dan Stoolman, Sheryl’s husband of 33 years. “We are proud of these two scholarship winners and know that they share Sheryl’s commitment to care for people in the best possible way.”

Megan Croghan is a 2008 graduate of Manning Community High School and attends Grand View University in Des Moines. She will receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in the spring of 2012. She is a member of the Grand View Nursing Student Association, National Student Nurses Association, a member of the women’s basketball team and has a work/study position in the Academic and Career Center at Grand View University.

Stephanie Brincks, a 2008 graduate of Kuemper Catholic High School, is enrolled at Clarkson College in Omaha. She will complete her BSN/RN degree in the fall of 2013. She works part-time as a Certified Nurse’s Aide at the Carroll Health Center, is a member of the Clarkson College Student Nurses’ Association and a volunteer at the YWCA.

“St. Anthony has been honored to work with Sheryl’s family to establish this scholarship program,” said Trish Roberts, St. Anthony Development Director. “Sheryl was a wonderful example and leader for younger nurses and through these scholarships her positive influence will continue.”

Sheryl Stoolman, a daughter of Cyril and Anita (Bruch) Venner, received her LPN degree from the St. Anthony School of Nursing and her RN degree from DMACC, where she continued as a part-time nursing instructor. Sheryl worked as an emergency room nurse at St. Anthony for 26 years and also as an EMT with the Carroll County Ambulance Service. Sheryl was a dedicated, compassionate and patient-focused nurse who always did whatever needed to be done to provide the best care possible. Sheryl died May 13, 2010, following an accident near Ogden, Iowa.

Sheryl’s family partnered with the St. Anthony Foundation to develop an endowed scholarship fund.  Each year earnings from the fund will be given in Sheryl’s memory to provide funds that will be used toward scholarships for LPN/RN nursing education, EMS training and for sponsoring healthcare education opportunities at St. Anthony.
