Friday, 22 April 2011

Receiving the 2011 scholarships are Denae Heithoff of Carroll and Ken Buelt of Breda. Ms. Heithoff currently works full-time at Stewart Memorial Hospital and part-time in the laboratory at St. Anthony Regional Hospital. Denae, a 2002 graduate of Carroll High School, is a mother of two. Denae is completing her EMT-basic education from the University of Iowa through Carroll County EMS and also training to be a Red Cross volunteer.  She received a degree as a Medical Lab Tech in 2010.  Her plans are to continue her education in EMS by attending an Advanced EMT class soon and she looks forward to eventually being a full-time EMS technician.

Mr. Buelt, a volunteer with the Breda Fire Department since 1991, became an EMT-basic in 2001.  He has volunteered with the Breda ambulance and in 2010, became a full-time employee with Carroll County Ambulance. Since that time, he has started training for Paramedic Specialist at Western Iowa Technical Community College in Sioux City with a completion date set for July of this year.  Ken stays busy with the Sons of American Legion in Breda and teaches for Region 5 Hazard Materials group as well as being an instructor for Firefighter I and Firefighter II courses.  He plans to further his education by completing the Critical Care Paramedic program soon.

Sheryl Stoolman, a daughter of Cyril and Anita (Bruch) Venner, received her LPN degree from the St. Anthony School of Nursing and her RN degree from DMACC, where she continued as a part-time nursing instructor. Sheryl worked as an emergency room nurse at St. Anthony for 26 years and also as an EMT with the Carroll County Ambulance Service. Sheryl was a dedicated, compassionate and patient-focused nurse who always did whatever needed to be done to provide the best care possible. Sheryl died May 13, 2010, following an accident near Ogden, Iowa.

Sheryl’s family partnered with the St. Anthony Foundation to develop an endowed scholarship fund.  Each year earnings from the fund will be given in Sheryl’s memory to provide funds that will be used toward scholarships for LPN/RN nursing education, EMS training and for sponsoring healthcare education opportunities at St. Anthony.
