St. Anthony Regional Hospital and Nursing Home is proud of its rich history which dates back to 1905 when Reverend Joseph Kuemper founded the hospital, with the help of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, from LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Today, St. Anthony Regional Hospital, along with its medical staff, serves the regional area of West Central Iowa. Patients at St. Anthony Regional Hospital have access to physicians in many specialties, state-of-the-art equipment, and up-to-date treatment procedures. Cost-effective care is provided in an atmosphere which reflects the institution’s Franciscan heritage and the values of the healing ministry of Christ, quality, patient/customer satisfaction, integrity, and high performance standards. Emphasis is placed on patient services, rehabilitation, education, and wellness recognizing an individual’s physical, spiritual, and psychosocial needs. St. Anthony Regional Hospital is a 99 bed facility with a connected 79 bed nursing home. The hospital and nursing home has approximately 610 employees, making it the third largest employer in the Carroll community. The hospital is a member of the American Hospital Association, the Iowa Hospitals Association, and has been designated as one of sixteen regional hospitals in Iowa by the Iowa State Department of Health. Physicians serving on St. Anthony’s medical staff on a continuous basis include specialists in the fields of, family medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, pathology, pediatrics, podiatry, psychiatry, radiology, and radiation oncology. Physician specialists in the areas of cardiology, dermatology, nephrology, medical oncology, allergy, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, physiatry, retinal surgery, pulmonology, and urology conduct periodic clinics on the hospital campus. The hospital’s emergency department is continuously staffed by dedicated emergency room physicians. Expansion and renovation of acute care areas, the OB unit, nursing home, Alzheimer’s unit, radiation oncology, chemotherapy and infusion center, and emergency department have taken place since 2001. In June 2008, St. Anthony opened a new surgery center that features the latest healthcare design and technology in four operating rooms, two endoscopy suites, and 20 private ambulatory recovery rooms for patients. In November 2008, the St. Anthony Education Center opened, providing ongoing training opportunities for nursing and other healthcare professionals. Twenty-four hour anesthesia coverage is provided by six certified registered nurse anesthetists. Complete ancillary services are available on campus, including laboratory, MRI, CT, and periodic PET, pharmacy, radiology, rehabilitation services, diabetes education, and nutrition. The hospital provides hemodialysis services, sleep center testing, physical and occupational therapy as well as athletic training. An on-site IMRT linear accelerator is available as well as high and low dose brachytherapy and CT treatment planning. St. Anthony Regional Hospital operates home health services, a hospice, and is the county’s public health nursing service provider. Our Community Education In addition, Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) offers higher education opportunities at their Carroll campus. DMACC provides a full range of both day and evening courses designed to meet the needs of both traditional and the non-traditional student.
