HISTORY

St. Anthony Regional Hospital and Nursing Home is proud of its rich history which  dates back to 1905 when Reverend Joseph Kuemper founded the hospital, with the help of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, from LaCrosse, Wisconsin.  Today, St. Anthony Regional Hospital, along with its medical staff, serves communities in West Central Iowa.

Patients at St. Anthony Regional Hospital have access to physicians in many specialties, state-of-the-art equipment, and up-to-date treatment procedures.  Cost-effective care is provided in an atmosphere which reflects the institution’s Franciscan heritage and the values of the healing ministry of Christ, quality, patient/customer satisfaction, integrity, and high performance standards.  Emphasis is placed on patient services, rehabilitation, education, and wellness recognizing an individual’s physical, spiritual, and psychosocial needs.

St. Anthony Regional Hospital is a 99 bed facility with a connected 79 bed nursing home.  The hospital is a member of the American Hospital Association, the Iowa Hospitals Association, and has been designated as one of sixteen regional hospitals in Iowa by the Iowa State Department of Health.

PHYSICIAN SERVICES

Physicians serving the Carroll area on a continuous basis include specialists in the fields of cardiology, family practice, general surgery, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology (ENT), pathology, pediatrics, podiatry, psychiatry, radiology, radiation oncology, and urology,.

Patients whose specific diagnostic and treatment needs relate to dermatology, nephrology, medical oncology, allergy, plastic surgery, pulmonology, and urology may visit physician specialists who conduct periodic clinics on the hospital campus.

ST. ANTHONY NURSING HOME

St. Anthony Nursing Home is a 79 bed intermediate care facility offering short- and long-term rehabilitative nursing care for residents as well as dedicted Alzheimer’s care. Adult day care service is available to members of the greater Carroll area each weekday. Activities are designed for opportunities to socialize, deliver personal care and give caregivers needed respite during the daytime hours.

Continuous patient care services are provided by a professional staff including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants.  Services include admission counseling, discharge planning, financial assistance counseling, and psychosocial counseling provided by three full-time social workers.  A social worker and psychologist are also available to serve residents’ needs.

HOME HEALTH AGENCY

St. Anthony Home Health Agency is a Medicare/Medicaid certified agency which provides services to individuals in 48 communities within a 30 mile radius of Carroll, Iowa.  The agency provides Home Care, Hospice and Public Health services, with a nurse on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

Home Care services include skilled nursing care for assessment & observation, wound care, dressing changes, instruction/education on medications and diet and other services as needed. Other Home Care services include home care aide services for bathing and personal care, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Nutritional counseling. Home Care service also provides Home and Community Based Waiver services as well as private pay nursing and home care aide services.

Hospice services provide supportive care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of terminally ill patients and their families.  The hospice uses a team approach with trained professionals, paraprofessionals, and non-professional volunteers.  Follow-up counseling and support is provided to families after the death of their loved ones through the bereavement program.

Public health nursing and community-based services are provided for the community at large through a contract with Carroll County Board of Supervisors.  These services include disease investigation and follow-up, immunization programs for children and adults, home visits to new parents after delivery of their baby, illness prevention programs, and health education for individuals, schools, and community groups. Two programs are offered to enhance the family experience: the HOPES (Healthy Opportunities for Parents to Experience Success) provides one-on-one mentoring support to help parents be the best they can be; and, the Stork’s Nest helps ensure healthy moms and healthy babies.

ACUTE CARE SERVICES

Emergency Care

St. Anthony Regional hospital's Emergency Room provides care for the community's residents. A physician is available to care for patients' emergencies 24-hours each day. Available services include physician consultation, laboratory evaluations, x-ray examinations, surgery, and pastoral care. St. Anthony is state designated Level IV Trauma Center.

Ambulatory Surgery Services

St. Anthony Regional Hospital's outpatient surgery and treatment programs offers convenient care to patients requiring diagnostic services and minor elective surgical procedures. Up-to-date patient and family waiting facilities are provided for the period prior to surgical procedures. Surgery is performed in the hospital's surgery suites and patients recover in a comfortable facility prior to returning to home.

Surgery/Anesthesia Services

St. Anthony Regional Hospital's Surgery Department features four operating rooms and endoscopy suite, recovery facilities for patients undergoing a variety of surgery procedures.

Twenty-four hour anesthesia coverage is provided. The anesthesia department provides pain management services for both acute and chronic pain. Services are provided by five certified registered nurse anesthetists. Special pain care services include pain associated with cancer, low back pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, migraine, and myofacial headaches.

Cardiology Services

Cardiology services offered by St. Anthony Regional Hospital include diagnostic EKGs, telemetry monitoring, Holter monitoring, treadmill stress testing, nuclear medicine studies, Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, temporary pacemaker insertion, and cardiac diagnostic services. Intensive care services are provided in a six-bed unit which utilizes advanced monitoring equipment and continuous, direct observation of all patients. Telemetry equipment is available to monitor the cardiac status of patients in the other care areas. The entire staff maintains certification in basic cardiac life support and all registered nurses Advanced Cardiac Life Support certified. Phase II cardiac rehabilitation incorporating educational and counseling activities is available for those who require supervised graded exercise.

Oncology

Comprehensive cancer care, including medical oncology, chemotherapy and radiation therapy is provided for the community by St. Anthony Regional Hospital. Radiation therapy is provided five days a week by a board-certified radiation oncologist. Medical  oncology services are provided board-certified medical oncologists. Certified Oncology Registered Nurses provide chemotherapy to patients in dedicated chemotherapy area. A cancer support team consisting of nursing, nutrition, pastoral care, pharmacy, behavioral medicine, social services and education provide daily support to patients with cancer.

Dialysis

A fully equipped hemodialysis center is located at St. Anthony Regional Hospital. The twelve station unit is staffed by dialysis-certified registered nurses and provides acute and chronic hemodialysis for patients within a 60 mile radius of St. Anthony Regional Hospital. Medical direction is provided by a consulting nephrologist.

The Birth Place

Mother and infant care is offered to new parents in a family-centered childbirth environment. A home-like setting is provided for the hospital stay, featuring labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum (LDRP) rooms which allow for "rooming-in" opportunities. A fully equipped operating room is located in the department should a C-section be required. Anesthesia and surgeons are immediately available on 24-hour/7 day per week schedule. Educational services provided for parents, family members, and caregivers include breast feeding support, a "Prepared Childbirth" clas, a "Lamaze Refresher" class, "Our New Baby" for brothers and sisters, "Baby Care basics 101" and "Lifesavers Baby." The Birth Place staff provide home visits to new mothers at the request of the patient's physician.

St. Anthony Mental Health Services

St. Anthony Mental Health Services offers a variety  of coordinated treatment programs including inpatient, outpatient, and twenty-four crisis services. The inpatient program is provided by a comprehensive multi-disciplinary team lead by three psychiatrists and include nursing care, social services, occupational and recreational therapy, pastoral care. Therapeutic approaches include individual, group, and family therapy, nutritional counseling, and psychopharmacology. A comprehensive after-care program is developed for each patient, with continuity of care being essential. Outpatient programs include individual, couple and family therapy, as well as psychiatric consultation. A twenty-four hour crisis line is available for use by residents of the region.

Health Information Management

The Health Information Management Department at St. Anthony Regional hospital facilitates the efforts of the healthcare team by maintaining patients' records in complete and accurate fashion. The department processes patient records, computes hospital statistics, transcribes dictated reports, and retrieves patient information for ongoing care. A medical information resource center located in the Health Information Management Department provides on-line access to medical libraries and research capabilities.

Respiratory Therapy

St. Anthony Regional Hospital provides a variety of Respiratory Therapy services for both inpatients and outpatients. Among the services provided are diagnostic tests, including Pulmonary Function, or PFT, which looks at lung function, and electroencephalograph, or EEG, used to identify various brain functions.

Respiratory care practitioners administer daily treatments to inpatients using sophisticated equipment that help with lung disorders such as asthma. emphysema, pneumonia and bronchitis.

The Respiratory Department also operates the St. Anthony Sleep Center, where tests are conducted to diagnose sleep disorders that may cause interrupted sleep and fatigue. Tests are performed one-on-one by a Registered Polysomnograph Tech or Registered Respiratory Therapist in a comfortable, home-like setting.

Radiology

The Radiology Department at St. Anthony Regional Hospital offers state-of-the-art diagnostic imagining, including general radiology, tomography, mammography, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine. Additional services offered by the radiology department include invasive radiology, surgical radiography with remote fluoroscopy, fixed CT, MRI and bone desitrometry scanning.

Laboratory

Laboratory services provided on an around-the-clock basis include general chemistry, special chemistry, serology, bacteriology, histology, and blood bank services. In addition, the laboratory features microbiology, immunology, toxicology, therapeutic drug level monitoring, and comprehensive pathology services.

Rehabilitation Services

Rehabilitation Services at St. Anthony Regional Hospital offers comprehensive array of services to both inpatients and outpatients. Care is provided to residents of St. Anthony Nursing Home, patients in the hospital-based home health agency, and through the St. Anthony Clinics.

The department is staffed by three physical therapists, two physical therapy assistants, an exercise physiologist, an occupational therapist, six support staff. In addition to evaluating and treating a wide variety of acute orthopedic and neurological problems, sports injury physical therapy for area high schools and recreational athletes. Numerous educational programs, including fitness testing and screenings, are offered to area businesses and community organizations. Special programs are offered for athletic conditioning including sports performance and golf swing evaluation.

Pharmacy

The Pharmacy Department serves the acute care hospital, nursing home, rural clinics associated with St. Anthony Regional Hospital. The pharmacy features 24 hour unit dose drug distribution, computerized pharmacy system, drug information/consultation services and drug use review. Additional services include the preparation of antineoplastic drugs, parenteral nutrition services, an IV additive service, patient controlled analgesia service, and epidural narcotic preparation.

Food and Nutrition Service

 The Food and Nutrition Service Department offers food and nutritional supplements to hospitalized patients, nursing home residents, healthcare professionals, and the community at large. Services include cafeteria dining which is open to the public, catering services for special in-house functions, vending services, meal preparation for Congregated Meals/Meals on Wheels, meal service to Orchard View retirement community, and consulting dietitian services to 13 area hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities.

St. Anthony Regional Hospital's Food and Nutrition Service Department employs a team of registered/licensed dietitians to provide nutritional counseling, educational classes for cancer patients, and counseling to behavioral medicine, cardiac, and pulmonary rehabilitation patients.

Social Services

St. Anthony Regional Hospital's Social Services Department serves hospitalized patients and their families with discharge planning, coordinating community referral sources, and support counseling. Social workers are available to assist  admission coordinators for the long-term care facility and to provide supportive counseling services.

Quality Management

The Quality Management Department interacts with all hospital departments and healthcare providers at At. Anthony Regional Hospital. Responsibilities include utilization review, infection control, patient care evaluation, risk management.

Pastoral Care

Spiritual care is offered to patients of all faiths at St. Anthony Regional Hospital & Nursing Home.  Spiritual and prayerful support is provided to patients and families, including bereavement support in times of crisis.

The hospital meditation chapel located on the second floor is open to persons of all faiths.  Mass is offered in the St. Anthony Nursing Home Chapel and may be seen on closed circuit television for those individuals unable to attend personally.  Holy Communion is distributed on weekdays and Sundays to Catholic patients and residents.  The Sacrament of the Sick and the Sacrament of Reconciliation are ministered to Catholic patients upon request and to nursing home residents on a monthly basis.  Protestant residents may take advantage of a weekly ecumenical prayer service and ministers of different denominations are available at the request of patients.

Under the guidance of the Pastoral Care Department the “No One Dies Alone” program offers trained volunteer companionship to patients or residents who are in the end stages of life and have no family or friends available during their final hours.
 

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT SERVICES

The Education Department at St. Anthony Regional Hospital provides a variety of services in response to the needs of hospital patients, health professionals, and the community at large by conveying information designed to assist individuals in the pursuit of knowledge, skills, and personal wellness.

   Patient Education Services

Patient Education Services are provided to enable patients and families to make informed decisions about their health, to manage their illnesses, and to implement follow-up care.  Educational resources are available to meet the needs of patients with special learning needs.

            Community Health Education Resources

Community Health Education Resources focus on health maintenance and disease prevention for the community.  In addition to the educational programs offered under the auspices of the Maternal-Child Health Program, the community is offered blood pressure screenings and information, CPR training and cardiac support. Also offered are “I Can Cope” classes and “Make Today Count” support groups for cancer patients and their families and the Carroll Area United Ostomy Association.

Staff Development

The staff development component offers St. Anthony Regional Hospital’s personnel education regarding hazardous materials, fire safety, infection control, disaster preparedness, back care, other safety awareness, and crisis management.

Continuing Professional Education

Continuing medical education programs are offered for physicians and other healthcare providers in the region.  Continuing nursing education is provided for licensed nurses employed both at St. Anthony Regional Hospital & Nursing Home and for other nursing professionals in the geographic region.  A wide variety of programs are offered on a periodic basis.
