St. Anthony Mammography Receives Top Rating

The annual inspection of the mammography facilities at Saint Anthony Regional Hospital (SARH) was recently completed by the Iowa Department of Public Health in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration.  “We are extremely pleased to announce that we received a ‘no findings’ rating,” reports Nancy Malloy, Director of Radiology.  The Mammography Quality Standards Act supports continuous improvement in mammography services.  This is accomplished through the implementation of various standards and inspections to ensure that all facilities providing mammography services offer a basic level of service. “If a facility is cited with insufficient or undesirable activities, they can be cited from a Level 1 rating (the most serious) to a Level 3 (representing minor deviations from the Mammography Quality Standards Act ).  The fact that we received the best rating of “no findings” is a testimony to the dedication and hard work of our entire department in meeting the expectations of the requirements”, notes Malloy.

Mammograms done at St. Anthony are interpreted by radiologists from Iowa Radiology.  The Lead Interpreting Radiologist at St. Anthony is Dr. Robert McCleeary.  Part of the annual inspection process is to assure that all individuals performing or interpreting mammograms have met the initial and ongoing educational process. Additional inspection criteria assure that mammography equipment is routinely tested for quality and verifies the highest standard of operation.

“The inspection process is actually an ongoing effort by our radiology staff, physicians, and service personnel to maintain the highest quality standards in order to provide the best possible examinations for our patients,” says Malloy. The technologists who perform mammograms at St. Anthony have completed extensive training in the latest exam techniques. Interpretation is  enhanced by the Computer Aided Detection (CAD) system which analyzes images and provides a printout of areas that warrant special attention.

St. Anthony’s Radiology Department leads the area in diagnostic services by offering Carroll and the surrounding communities the latest technology in mammography, x-ray, ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET and nuclear medicine.
