Riedmann On Tuesday, August 22, St. Anthony Regional Hospital held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new 120,000 square foot inpatient and outpatient surgery center. The new $25 million surgery center will feature state-of-the-art surgical technology and two levels of covered parking. The new construction project will replace St. Anthony’s 35 year-old surgery facilities and existing technology. The surgery department has grown from two surgeons in 1971 to eight active surgeons who live in Carroll today. The last significant investment to the surgery department was in 1992, with the introduction of the same day surgery unit. Since 1992, the number of surgeries performed at St. Anthony has grown dramatically, from 2,073 in 1992 to 4,503 in 2006, and increase of 117.2%. Featured speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony were Art Neu, St. Anthony Regional Hospital Board Chairperson; Gary Riedmann, St. Anthony President; Congressman Steve King (R-IA); and Father James McCormick, Pastor of Holy Spirit Parish. Also taking part in the ceremony were members of the hospital and foundation boards of directors, as well as Joyce Ryberg, Vice President of Patient Services; Linn Schrage, director of the medical/surgical/pediatrics unit; Linda Petersen, director of surgery; John Knorr, director of anesthesia; Cheri Theulen, director of same day surgery; and Cathy Tigges, clinical recovery room coordinator. Physicians participating in the ceremony included Chief of Staff, Dominick Ervelli, D.O.; Ronald Cheney, D.O.; Thomas Menzel, M.D.; Syed Bokhari, M.D.; Josh Smith, D.O.; Thomas Dulaney, M.D.; Tracey Wellendorf, M.D.; Lou Ann Lease, M.D.; Nelson Lo, M.D.; Eric Jensen, D.P.M., and Frank McCabe, M.D. Students from Holy Spirit grade school released 100 balloons in celebration of the groundbreaking.
