May 29, 2007 NEWS RELEASE Carroll Nursing Student Receives Iowa Hospital Association Scholarship Shannon Hinners, a Des Moines Area Community College nursing student, has been awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the Iowa Hospital Association. She is among 29 outstanding students, all from Iowa, who have received assistance from Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation Health Care Career Scholarship Program. Shannon has worked at St. Anthony since 2003, starting as a CNA in the nursing home and is currently working on third floor. “We are extremely pleased that Shannon can represent St. Anthony as an IHERF scholarship recipient as she continues her nursing education,” said Gary Riedmann, St. Anthony President. “IHERF made their selections from a very large number of competitive applications.” Iowa hospitals established the scholarship in 2004 to help address the ongoing shortage of health care professionals and encourage young Iowans to remain in the state as they establish their careers. This scholarship program offers students as much as $3,000 per academic year, or a maximum of $6,000 over two years. In exchange for that financial support, scholarship-winning students agree to work one year in an Iowa hospital for each year they receive an award. The award-winning students represent all parts of the state. Hospital leaders from all parts of the state evaluated scholarship applications judged on grade-point average, a written personal statement, letters of reference, and extracurricular, community, and health care-related activities. “Iowa’s hospitals are proud to support these outstanding students who will keep our quality of care among the best in the nation,” said IHA President and CEO Kirk Norris. “We look forward to these young people joining the 70,000 employees who already work for Iowa’s hospitals.” |
